Number of the month: 46 percent

Will there soon be as many smart homes as smartphones?

Smartphones definitely dominate our everyday lives – 81 percent of Germans own one, and the figure is even higher in all age groups under 60. But the various smart home applications also seem to be becoming increasingly established. A representative survey by the market research company Splendid Research found that a full 46 percent of respondents use at least one smart home-enabled application. That's already more than half of all smartphone users – a remarkable result.

Twelve percent of respondents use multiple applications linked to a single system. Twenty-eight percent are interested in using such systems in the future. The most common areas of application for smart home solutions are entertainment and communication, energy management, health, and building security. The main reasons given for purchasing smart home technology were comfort, security, and enjoyment. However, 26 percent of respondents categorically reject smart home technology. The primary reasons for this rejection are the high cost, privacy concerns, and fear of hacker attacks.
