Figure for the month of July: 65.1 m²
People who live in their own homes have more living space available than those who rent. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office in a press release in June following initial results from the supplementary microcensus survey on housing. Age also plays a role.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, the amount of living space owned depends primarily on ownership. Last year, homeowners had an average of 65.1 square meters at their disposal, while renters had to make do with 48.5 square meters.
Generally speaking, older people in Germany have more living space available on average than younger people. Last year, the average living space per person in households where the main income earner was at least 65 years old was 68.5 square meters.
The next youngest age group, those aged 45 to 64, lived in an average of 54.8 square meters. Household members aged 25 to 44 had the smallest living space at 44.7 square meters per person. Those under 25 had 45.4 square meters. Furthermore, the year the household moved in also plays a role. The further back it is, the larger the living space tends to be.
