Christmas trends 2020
A year that brought many restrictions and uncertainties is slowly but surely drawing to a close. All the more reason to celebrate the upcoming Christmas season in a truly special way and create Christmas decorations that set the mood for the most wonderful time of the year. Let yourself be inspired by this year's trends!
This year, too, there is a variety of Christmas styles and decorating trends, so that both traditionalists and trendsetters will find something to their liking.
The trend towards sustainability is very much in vogue: Christmas tree ornaments and other decorative items are presented in natural or durable materials such as wood, metal, porcelain, cotton, or paper, which are often combined. This year, Christmas tree ornaments are also more extravagant. The stars of the Christmas tree are ornaments made of glass, velvet, or paper.
Where naturalness reigns supreme, materials like eucalyptus, pine cones, larch branches, and pine are indispensable. Cones in their various shapes and sizes can be combined in countless ways, and eucalyptus lends the Christmas scene a touch of the exotic. For a modern decorating style, these natural finds can also be arranged in a minimalist style, alongside Christmas ornaments, on a white, painted wire mesh.
Candles in lanterns, candle holders, or candle holders create a warm glow, and this year they are designed to look good all year round. For the Christmas light display, parents and pet owners often opt for LED candles and lights for safety reasons. In many places, classic candles are also being replaced by scented candles to enhance the Christmas atmosphere with a hint of cinnamon, vanilla, pine, or cedarwood.
The tried-and-tested Christmas classics of fir green, red, and gold remain popular in the color palette, while blue and gray are added to the range of dark and bold colors this year. The dark colors look particularly elegant when combined with gold and silver accents. This creates a striking and cozy atmosphere by candlelight.

Among this year's trend colors, gray might not seem to fit the Christmas theme at first glance. But that's a misconception: In the form of placemats, tablecloths, and cloth napkins, gray lends the Christmas table a calm and elegant touch, especially when combined with brass elements such as napkin rings or candlesticks. Gray is also combined with other light, understated shades like taupe, sand, and other stone and pearly hues.
The understated aesthetic contrasts with creative, experimental ideas, techniques, designs, and materials, as presented at the Christmasworld 2020 trade fair in Frankfurt in January. On display were, for example, Christmas ornaments with vegetal motifs such as blossoms and leaves embedded in glass and paper. Another trend is ornaments embossed with diamonds, patterns, or lines, as clear, geometric shapes like rectangles and prisms are in vogue for Christmas 2020. Decorative items and Christmas figurines tend to be simple and understated rather than detailed and ornate.
In terms of texture, smooth and rough surfaces are combined. Glossy glass and metal surfaces contrast with rough, broken, and crinkled textures. Brittle and cracked surfaces and a touch of patina appear natural and unpretentious.
The same applies to the selection of decorative fabrics: Silky-smooth, shimmering table runners are just as popular as soft velvet and cuddly, fluffy materials. These include long-pile fabrics such as sheepskin or faux fur.
