Declaring war on pigeon droppings
Pigeon droppings are not only unsightly, they also damage building structures and pose health risks. To protect both health and the building, pigeon droppings should be removed regularly by a professional. To minimize cleaning costs, there are animal-friendly methods to keep pigeons away from the property.
Pigeon droppings often reduce the value of properties, as they can damage building materials such as concrete, steel, brick, aluminum, marble, or sandstone. Removing the droppings incurs regular and significant cleaning and repair costs. This work should only be carried out by a professional, as the dust generated during cleaning can pose health risks. Modern methods can help prevent this problem from occurring in the first place.
Pigeon slide
So-called "birdslides" are an animal-friendly and visually unobtrusive solution for making niches on a property less inviting. Birdslides are special angled pieces made of acrylic or metal that are glued to edges, ledges, and projections on the facade. The slippery surface, with an angle of at least 45 degrees, prevents pigeons and other birds from gaining a foothold. Before installation, the niches should be cleared of any branches used for nesting.
Wind turbine
As an alternative to slides, visual and acoustic systems are also good and easy-to-install means of deterring pigeons. Small windmills on the windowsill irritate pigeons and, with their movements and whirring sounds, prevent them from landing. Special windmills are available that rotate even in light winds.
light
Small lights with motion sensors, powered by solar energy and which can be attached to windows, balconies, terraces or trees, also help to deter pigeons.
Raven decoy
The raven is the pigeon's natural enemy. These decoys are very effective, but some pigeons become accustomed to them and no longer perceive them as a threat. To prevent this, the decoys should be moved regularly.
For animal welfare reasons, deterrents such as nail boards or nets are not recommended. They can cause life-threatening injuries to the birds or trap them until they starve to death.
