Save on sewage fees with a garden water meter

Water used in households, for example through toilet flushing, enters the sewer system and must then be treated, for which municipalities charge a wastewater fee. This fee also applies to tap water used by gardeners to water their flowers, lawns, or salad greens.

A garden water meter records how much tap water is used exclusively for the garden and seeps into the ground there, thus helping to reduce sewage fee for tap .
While watering flowerbeds and lawns does use tap water – unless a cistern is present – it doesn't produce wastewater that requires expensive treatment. By installing a garden water meter in addition to the main water meter in the house, homeowners can save a significant amount of money, as the local water supplier then reduces the amount of wastewater measured by the garden meter on the annual bill.

Since water suppliers are always local providers and operate under public authority, there are many different regulations regionally. Therefore, before installing a garden water meter, you should first contact your local water supplier. They will inform you whether installing a water meter in your garden is permitted and whether there are any regulations regarding who is responsible for installing it. You should also inquire about regulations concerning inspection and maintenance.

Generally, a garden water meter must be installed downstream of the existing water meter to ensure accurate measurement of total water consumption. Older buildings often have a water connection pit where the meter can be installed. Alternatively, it can be placed in the basement at a location where pipes can be easily routed outside. For new builds, the installation of a garden water meter can be planned from the outset.

If self-installation is permitted by the water supplier and has been clarified with them, garden water meters can be purchased from specialist retailers and most DIY stores starting at around €17. Connection fittings, seals, and, if necessary, connectors should also be on your shopping list.

Anyone who isn't a professional DIYer should leave the installation to a specialist and hire a plumber. Their services typically cost between 80 and 150 euros, but can be more expensive in more complex cases. They not only ensure proper installation but also usually register the meter with the local water supplier.
