Protecting single-family homes from lightning strikes is also important
Severe, unpredictable storms are becoming increasingly frequent in Germany as well. The location of a lightning strike cannot be predicted, and contrary to popular belief, tall buildings nearby do not offer absolute protection.
While suitable lightning protection has long been mandatory for high-rise buildings above 20 meters, many single-family homes still lack the right equipment.
Lightning is life-threatening, and a strike can cause cardiac arrest, paralysis, or even death, even in the immediate vicinity, when the 100 million volts impact the human body. Furthermore, the entire house can burn down, and all electrical appliances can be destroyed.
A lightning rod, which is part of the external lightning protection system, is designed to prevent lightning from striking the house directly. It is installed in an exposed location on the roof so that, in the event of a lightning strike, the resulting current is conducted along the side of the house and into the ground.

Since this measure only protects the house from fire caused by a lightning strike, but electrical appliances can still be damaged, internal surge protection is recommended to protect against power surges. Unlike a lightning rod, this can be installed by the homeowner. Surge protection devices are available starting at around €300, while complete systems can cost between €2,000 and €3,000, depending on the size of the house. However, since insurance rarely covers all damage from a lightning strike, it is advisable to review your policy and weigh the costs against the benefits.
