Steinbach is a district of Lebach in the Saarlouis district of Saarland. Until the end of 1973, Steinbach was an independent municipality.
Population: 1571 (November 30, 2024).
Geography:
Location:
Steinbach lies in the Saar-Nahe Uplands, about 10 km from the geographical center of Saarland. The gently rolling landscape in which Steinbach is situated, which also belongs to the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, is surrounded by mountains that are among the highest in Saarland. These include, among others, the 569-meter-high Schaumberg to the northeast.[2]
Steinbach borders the district of Tholey to the east, Dörsdorf to the north, Gresaubach to the west and Thalexweiler to the south.[2]
History
The first traces of settlement in the Steinbach district were documented by archaeological finds. These included bronze rings, stone axes, graves from the La Tène period (5th–1st century BC), and coins.[2]
The present-day Steinbach originally developed between the 9th and 13th centuries from the two villages of Obersteinbach and Niedersteinbach. Around the year 1000, Steynback inferior and Steynback superior, along with Dessdorf (Dörsdorf) and Aspach (Aschbach), already belonged to the parish of Echeswyler (Thalexweiler). Politically, the parish belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine in the district of Schaumburg. This affiliation with Lorraine lasted until the French Revolution. During this time, the two villages of Obersteinbach and Niedersteinbach merged to form a single municipality, which in 1789 was inhabited by 49 families and had 244 inhabitants.[2] Until 1814, it was part of the Canton of Tholey in the Département Moselle.
Iron ore was mined in some parts of the municipality in the past and processed in Bettingen (now Schmelz). Geologically, the ore mines of Steinbach belonged to the southern part of the so-called Rotliegend Basin.[2]
As part of the Saarland territorial and administrative reform, the previously independent municipality of Steinbach via Lebach, which belonged to the district of Ottweiler, was assigned to the municipality of Lebach.[3]
