Germans love to improve their own homes. According to a recent representative survey by the market research institute Splendid Research, almost 60 percent of respondents consider themselves good DIYers. Sixteen percent of these consider themselves skilled DIYers, and 43 percent "manage." A quarter of respondents stated that they are somewhat good DIYers. Another 16 percent, however, are self-critical and do not consider themselves particularly skilled DIYers.

Both men and women were surveyed. For example, over 90 percent of respondents felt confident enough to hammer a nail into the wall to hang a picture. Wallpapering a room is considerably more complicated, but poses no problem for 40 percent of women and 64 percent of men. 28 percent of female respondents and 74 percent of male respondents felt confident installing a ceiling light. And laying tiles is also no problem for 12 percent of women and 33 percent of men.
