According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost every second household in Germany owns a property. Single-family homes are the most common form of ownership. At the beginning of 2018, 31 percent of private households owned a house. Fourteen percent of German households owned apartments, and five percent owned a two-family house.

Four percent owned undeveloped land, and another four percent owned other buildings. Two percent of private households in Germany owned multi-family homes. Multiple responses were possible. However, it's not just the figures in this statistic that are interesting, but also the fact that the more people living in a household, the greater the likelihood that one of them owns property. For households with at least four members, the homeownership rate rises to 71 percent.
