When Germans dream of owning their own home, they do so realistically. When asked what kind of property they would like to live in – a detached house, a penthouse, a villa, a castle, or something else – the answer was clear. According to a representative study by Interhyp, 60 percent of respondents prefer a detached house. This is followed by a penthouse – 15 percent can imagine living there. Ten percent each would prefer to live in a villa or a castle. Five percent indicated "other.".

When asked about their reasons for choosing their dream home, the respondents replied that while dreams are beautiful, they must also be achievable. However, they also stated that overly extravagant housing dreams would disconnect them from their everyday lives.
