German households are getting smaller. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 1.99 people lived in a household in 2018. In 1991, the figure was still 2.27 people per household. This trend is having a significant impact on the housing market. Because when households get smaller, it also means that the number of households increases – and thus the demand for real estate.

Especially in metropolitan areas, the proportion of single-person households is steadily increasing. In 2018, 42 percent of the 41.4 million German households were single-person households. According to statistics, two-person households accounted for 34 percent. Three-person households and households with four or more people each made up only 12 percent.
