25 kWh/(m²*a) – kilowatt hours per square meter per year – is the lowest and therefore most energy-efficient value on German energy performance certificates. This represents the minimum for both the final and primary energy demand of a house. Values higher than 25 indicate lower energy efficiency. Values below 30 kWh/(m²*a) still fall within the best possible energy efficiency class, A+. The scale theoretically ranges from 0 (energy efficiency class A+) to 250 (energy efficiency class H).

The typical final energy demand of a new building is around 50 kWh/(m²*a). This places new buildings on the borderline between energy efficiency classes A and B. According to consumer advice centers, the average consumption of German residential buildings is 160 kWh/(m²*a), unfortunately falling between energy efficiency classes E and F.
