Number of the month

5.000.000

Currently, around five million houses in Germany are over 60 years old. This corresponds to almost a quarter of the total number of approximately 19 million owner-occupied homes in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, more than half of all German owner-occupied homes are over 40 years old. Numerous older properties are only now coming onto the market because their original or subsequent owners are moving into retirement homes or want to downsize. The market for these houses is booming, as many buyers are motivated to purchase by low interest rates.

Due to current low interest rates and a housing shortage, demand for properties of this age is high. While they are cheaper than modern new builds, the high demand allows them to fetch good prices. The fact that some properties of this age require renovation does not diminish the demand.
