Number of the month

84 %

84 percent of German citizens would prefer to live in their own home rather than rent. This is true for both those who currently own their own property and those who still rent. Most homeowners do not regret their decision. This was the finding of a survey conducted by the opinion research institute Civey for Spiegel Online.

Therefore, according to the survey, more than one in three 30- to 39-year-olds plan to "definitely" or "probably" buy an apartment or house within the next five years. The respondents were aware that real estate prices are currently high. Although Germany has the lowest homeownership rate in the EU, with only about half of the population living in their own home, the majority of Germans still desire their own property.
