Germans who own their own homes have almost twice as much living space as those who rent. This is the result of a survey of 2,100 German citizens conducted by the mortgage lender Interhyp. Homeowners have an average of 146 square meters of living space, while renters have an average of only 77 square meters.

However, there are regional differences. People in rural areas often live in more spacious homes. In addition, housing costs are usually lower there, while the standard of living is generally higher. While city dwellers typically live in an average of 83 square meters with three rooms, rural residents have an average of 138 square meters and almost six rooms at their disposal.
