Approximately 58 percent, or 48 million, of Germans prefer to live in a small or medium-sized town or in the surrounding area. This was the finding of Interhyp's housing preferences study last year. Besides property prices, the well-developed public transportation system is another factor that makes smaller towns and their surrounding areas so attractive.

A quarter of German citizens (26 percent) prefer living in the countryside, meaning in a village. More than seven million Germans live in places with 2,000 inhabitants or fewer. For 16 percent of those surveyed, a large city is their preferred place to live. Nevertheless, almost a third of Germans live in one of the 85 German cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. However, what is important to almost everyone (90 percent) when choosing where to live is proximity to family and friends.
