Enjoying old age in paradise

Year-round sunshine and a mild climate? Spending days on your own veranda with a cocktail? A round of golf in the afternoon? That's the perfect way to enjoy a well-deserved retirement. That's why more and more retirees are thinking: Anything to get away! But there are pitfalls, too.

German seniors are living longer and healthier than ever before. Once their children have left home and their working lives are over, many retirees enjoy their newfound freedom. They are increasingly flexible and mobile, and they actively shape their leisure time. They travel to exotic destinations or take cruises. A growing number of older people are even choosing to retire abroad.

Many dream of summer, sun, beach, and sea. However, the warmest countries aren't necessarily the most suitable. After all, what good is a view of the ocean if the nearest hospital is miles away or the doctor speaks neither German nor English? Anyone dreaming of Miami, for example—popular with many seniors because of its pleasant climate—should know that the cost of living in the USA is higher than in Germany.

Among the most suitable countries for retirees are Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Spain. Living costs are low in these countries, and medical care is excellent. And you don't have to forgo sun and sand here either.

Furthermore, it is advisable to pay attention to a few other things when relocating your retirement abroad. Emigrants can find out whether their chosen country is truly right for them by asking themselves questions such as:

  • Do I understand the mentality of the country?
  • Is this climate something for me?
  • How well am I coping with the distance from my hometown?
  • Can I tolerate the local cuisine?

A resident of Hamburg might find it difficult to answer these questions positively, even if they only imagine living in the Bavarian countryside. Experts therefore advise: Anyone considering emigrating should at least have visited the country on vacation.

Moving abroad requires careful planning. To benefit fully from the move, it's also important to seek advice regarding pensions, taxes, and insurance.

However, those who prepare well and choose their destination country wisely can spend a relaxed retirement with more purchasing power than in Germany.
