A beautiful bay window adorns the house
A covered porch increases the property value
The term "oriel window" derives from the French word "arquière," meaning "shooting post" or "firing embrasure." The original purpose of this wall projection was to provide a panoramic view. In the Middle Ages, oriel windows were therefore often added to fortifications to better survey the fortress wall and allow defenders to rout potential attackers from cover with projectiles.
decorative element
Later, the bay window became a decorative element of the house facade and the epitome of cozy comfort. The extension adds a design element with a unique layout to the room, making it appear more spacious. The possibilities for use and furnishing are manifold: depending on the size of the extension, it can become a comfortable seating area for social gatherings, for example, as an extension of the dining room. Thanks to its windows, the bay window, even when added later, can brighten dark rooms. The natural light and the expanded view make it an ideal retreat for hobbies such as painting, music, or crafts.
Effort and costs
The cost of a bay window starts at around €6,000 and varies considerably depending on size, construction, and materials. You can save a significant amount on a new build – at least if you don't opt for a custom design. Many home builders offer pre-designed houses with a built-in bay window already incorporated into the floor plan. You should expect higher costs due to the necessary modifications if you want to add a bay window later. Walls and possibly the roof will need to be removed, and the flooring adjusted to fit the living space. Since the extension increases the facade surface area, you should also anticipate higher energy costs. Our tip: Insulate the new bay window during the construction phase!
Legal requirements
A potential disadvantage is that warranty claims against the construction company may be voided by the structural alterations. Building regulations must also be observed. Check with your local building authority beforehand to find out if you need a building permit.
